Extrusion blow molding is a method of making hollow thermoplastic parts. Well-known blow molding objects are bottles, buckets, cans, boxes, and all containers that package food, beverages, cosmetics, medicines, and daily necessities. Large blow molding containers are commonly used in the packaging of chemical products, lubricants and bulk materials. Other blow molded products include balls, bellows and toys. For the automotive industry, fuel tanks, car shock absorbers, seat backs, center brackets, and armrests and headrest covers are blow molded. For machinery and furniture manufacturing, blow molded parts are shells, door frames, frames, clay POTS, or boxes with an open side.


A more common blow-extruded plastic material is high-density polyethylene, the polymer used in most milk bottles. Other polyolefins are also often processed by blow molding. Continuous mixing (extruder) is the most commonly used equipment because it provides a consistent quality product and reduces operating costs. There are two types of mixing: Distributed mixing materials are distributed uniformly in the mix without the need for high shear stress. This type of mixture is called extensional mixing or laminar mixing.


Distributed mixing is also called strong mixing, in which high shear stresses are applied to break up cohesive solids. For example, when additive pellets are broken, the actual particle size is reduced.


Mixing operations often require two mixing types in one process.
